Episode 90: Hi, My Name is Shanna
My name is Shanna.
But I’ve been called every name in the book: Shana, Shayna, Shannon, Shanana (that’s a really good story for another day). I’ve been told my name isn’t spelled right, it doesn’t look right, and that I should really change it to make it easier for other people.
Pronouncing names correctly is an important aspect of respect, collegiality, and leadership.
Someone’s name is their identity. How you honor their name is how you honor them as a person.
This is especially important in creating psychological safety and space where someone can come as their full self. It matters a lot as we consider how to develop more inclusive, diverse work environments.
This episode provides tips on how to clarify pronunciations, apologize when you make a mistake, and correct others when they say your name incorrectly.
Your One Bold Move: Make the effort to pronounce names correctly. When people mispronounce your name, thoughtfully and firmly correct them. To be yourself boldly, you have to be able to be yourself—and your name is who you are.
